Questions

Questions claimants often ask

Why have you contacted me?

Your solicitor has asked us to arrange an independent medical report for your claim. We are a medical reporting organisation: we find a suitable independent medical expert, arrange any appointment with you, and send the finished report to your solicitor.

We only contact you because your solicitor has instructed us. If you are not sure, ask your solicitor.

Will I have to pay?

No. You do not pay us for the report. Your solicitor instructs us and pays us for it.

How is the appointment arranged?

We send you a message with a secure link to choose an appointment from the times the expert has available. You can use the same link to confirm or change it. We send a reminder before the appointment.

How soon the appointment can be depends on the expert’s availability and the type of report. You can always ask us or your solicitor where things stand.

Will the appointment be in person, by video or on the papers?

Most reports need you to see the expert in person. For some reports the expert may see you by video call, or may prepare the report from your records alone (“on the papers”), so you would not need an appointment at all.

The expert decides what is needed for the report, and we tell you which applies before anything is booked.

How far will I have to travel?

Where we can, we arrange your appointment with a suitable expert near you. If you have difficulty travelling, tell us when the appointment is being arranged and we will do our best to help.

What should I bring?

Please bring:

  • photo identification, such as a passport or driving licence; or, if you do not have one,
  • proof of your address, such as a recent bill or bank statement, and your appointment letter or message.

If you wear glasses or hearing aids, or use any aids day to day, bring them with you as usual.

What happens at the appointment?

The expert introduces themselves and explains what will happen. They usually ask about what happened, how it has affected you and your health before and since, and may carry out an examination or tests relevant to the report.

The expert is independent. Their job is to give the court an honest opinion, not to treat you, and they will not give you medical advice at the appointment. If you have concerns about your health, speak to your GP.

You can bring someone with you for support. If you need an interpreter, a chaperone or step-free access, tell us beforehand.

What if I can’t attend?

Please tell us as soon as you can, using the link in your message or by email, and we will arrange another time. Letting us know early means the appointment can be offered to someone else.

What happens after the appointment?

The expert writes the report and we send it securely to your solicitor. We do not send the report to you directly. Your solicitor will go through it with you and explain the next steps in your claim.

How do you use my information?

We use your details only to arrange your medical report, and we keep them secure. Our messages to you never contain medical details. Read how we use claimants’ information in our privacy notice.

For questions about your appointment, use the link in your message or email us at enquiries@probitamedical.co.uk. For anything about your claim, please speak to your solicitor.

Please do not send medical records or medical details by ordinary email.

Something not right?

If you are unhappy with any part of how we have arranged your report, please tell us. Our complaints page explains how.
